A workman is in the process of removing the old cobra head luminaire. Replacing it with a 43 watt LED luminaire will save approximately 70% of the power currently used by this HPS luminaire and the ballast (150 watts). This savings amounts to approximately 468,000 watts per year per luminaire!

Download Excellent Dark Sky Maps

Click on the links provided to access and download APPS showing light pollution throughout the world.

These apps will provide maps that show light pollution gradients in your local area or an area of interest. This information will help you locate areas of great and little light pollution, important for finding better areas for astronomical observations and for locating areas where light pollution should be addressed through municipal policies and luminaire changes. They may also be used to ensure light levels have not increased, etc.

Right: Alberta, one of the most light polluted areas of the world. From the top: Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary. Note the wide distribution of light pollution from cities.

The following companies have been listed as they are carrying lighting products which are designed to meet LEC-Compliant approval. LEC-Compliant luminaires are designed to meet the LEC Prime Principle. Luminaires carrying IDA-Approval may not meet LEC-Compliant specifications which are much more stringent. From now on, this site will only recommend companies that carry LEC-Compliant products.

Note that LEC-Compliant Luminaires must not only meet all prior demanded specifications in effect by a jurisdiction but must also meet the demands of the LEC Prime Principle.

Please note that LEC's should be using full cut-off, low colour temperature LED lights (<3,000 K) that have LEC-Compliant approvals.

Use the purple buttons to the left to link to the web sites of the companies indicated. Here you will find descriptions and photos of their products as well as the specifications.

LEC-Type Organizations

Light-EfficientCommunities.com

International Dark-Sky Association (IDA)

Light-EfficientCommunities.com is an organization devoted to improving the quality of lighting for communities and their residents. The improved quality of lighting is then translated into improved health, well-being and safety for its inhabitants, human, flora, fauna and the environment. Better lighting also reduces energy consumption and costs leading to lower carbon footprints and reduced effects on climate change.

"The International Dark-Sky Association works to protect the night skies for present and future generations."

With chapters in many countries, the IDA works to improve and preserve dark skies by using educational products and approaches through its many chapters distributed world-wide.
